Baseball Greats Derek Jeter Will Pass in Hits in 2012

Derek Jeter is nearing the end of his great major league baseball career with the New York Yankees, but he still has a few years to play. Since Derek has been such a great and consistent player in his career, he is now at the stage where he is going to be passing some of the greatest players in baseball history with his stats. In 2012, Derek Jeter could move into the top ten in all-time hits in baseball history.

Derek Jeter enters the 2012 baseball season with 3,088 career hits, all while playing for the New York Yankees, my favorite baseball team. Jeter has been a great consistent hitter in his career, averaging 182 hits a season, and 206 hits per 162 games played over his 17 year major league baseball career.

On June 26, 2012, Derek Jeter will turn 38 years old. Derek is still the full-time shortstop for the New York Yankees, and he will likely get around 180 hits in the 2012 season. With 180 hits this season, Derek Jeter is going to pass some of the all-time greatest players in major league baseball history.

Derek Jeter's 3,088 hits is the 19th highest total in major league baseball history. Here are the players he will likely pass in the 2012 season. If Derek has a great year this season he could move as high as 10th on the all-time hits list.

Baseball Greats Derek Jeter Will Pass in Hits in 2012

Dave Winfield - 3,110

Derek Jeter needs just 23 hits to pass Dave Winfield, another former Yankees great, who racked up 1,300 of his hits playing for the Yankees.

Tony Gwynn - 3,141

Derek Jeter needs 54 hits to pass Tony Gwynn. The Yankees swept Tony Gwynn and the San Diego Padres in the 1998 World Series.

Robin Yount - 3,142

Derek Jeter needs 55 hits to pass Robin Yount, who played 1,479 of his 2,856 games as a shortstop.

Paul Waner - 3,152

Derek Jeter needs 65 hits to pass Paul Waner and move into 15th place on the all-time hits list.

George Brett - 3,154

Derek Jeter needs 67 hits to pass George Brett on the all-time hits list. Longtime Yankees fans like myself will relish Derek passing George Brett, who was a pain in the neck to the Yankees for many years with the Kansas City Royals.

Cal Ripken - 3,184

Derek Jeter needs 97 hits to pass baseball's all-time leader in consecutive games played in Cal Ripken. Ripken was a good player for a long time, but Derek Jeter has been a far better player and shortstop in the major leagues.

Nap Lajoie - 3,242

Derek Jeter needs 155 hits to pass Nap Lajoie.

Eddie Murray - 3,255

Derek Jeter needs 168 hits to pass switch-hitter Eddie Murray.

Willie Mays - 3,283

Willie Mays is in 10th place all-time in hits in the major leagues. Derek Jeter needs 196 hits to pass Willie Mays and end up in 10th place all-time in hits. Can Jeter get 196 hits in 2012? I doubt he will get that many this season, but you never know.
